042 Maori Workshop

On one weekend, I happened to pass by a room where the workshop on Maori culture was held. And there was one lady who came to talk to me and invited me to the workshop.

So, I ended up watching people dancing and singing beautifully. They even shared dinner with me.

I also enjoyed talking to this one lady who stressed out about the importance of maintaining and passing on Maori culture. She told me that the language is the key because it contains and expressed much about unique culture.  

I was grateful with them how they were open to and welcoming me.

とある週末、ニュージーランドの先住民であるMaori民族のワークショップに参加させてもらった。

「参加」と言っても、偶然、ワークショップが行われていた建物の前を通り掛かった際に声を掛けられた女性から「見ていく？」と誘いを受けたのである。

ワークショップに参加していた生徒が作ったMaori民族の音楽や踊り、お話をしばし楽しませてもらった。

また、声を掛けられた女性はMaori民族の文化伝承について色々と語ってくれた。特に「言語を守る事が大切」と強調していたのが印象的だった。「言葉には、単なるコミュニケーションとしての手段だけではなく、その民族が持つ独特の世界観や習慣、つまりは文化全てが含まれているから」とのこと。とある統計によると今日、年間100言語が失われていると言われる。そんな言語と共に失われている文化、しいえては先祖代々受け継がれてきた生きる術、知恵…は一体どれ程になるのだろうか。

「通りすがりの人間」であったにも関わらず、温かく出迎えてくれるMaori民族の皆さんに感謝。感謝。
